Dear Reader,
I have always enjoyed shooting guns. Early in life, my father taught me how to operate a gun, but more importantly how to be safe with a gun. From the first time I saw a gun, and knew what it could do, and that it was not a toy. I feel that the reason that most people are afraid of guns is that they were not raised to know how to treat them, and whatever they learned was from similar people.
Before I started researching this topic, I already had the opinion that guns are safe when used properly, and can protect people. I was aware that there were plenty of cases in which people had stopped shooters with guns of their own, but was unaware of the numbers.
I was interested in finding out specific instances in which a gun had to be used to stop a shooter. I was also interested if crime would go up if guns were not allowed in area, and also be able to have evidence to back up my opinions.
To find these answers, I researched the pros and cons of concealed carry, and read articles describing reasons that guns are better owned by all rather than severely regulated.
Through research, I found that in areas that do not allow firearms, it is more dangerous. I found that most Americans are for having guns guaranteed by law, but also think that the laws should be more strict. In my research, I found that laws that encourage the use of firearms create safer areas than places that constrict firearm use.
This research has reinforced my views about gun control and gun use. I believe that the right to own a gun should be guaranteed to all people, rather than heavily regulated use, or even no use.
I used 4 other genres to explain this point better. This includes a Two voice poem to see how two people with conflicting opinions realise the good in guns. Another genre is an advice column adapted from an article by James Q. Wilson that explains why gun control and/or banning guns would not be a good choice. I also adapted a set of guidelines to follow when you use a firearm from the NRA, to educate readers about how to be safe with guns, rather than be afraid of them. Lastly, I made a graph showing the amounts of crime between countries, and you will note that in places where the right to a gun is protected by law have lower crime rates than those without the guarantee.
Sincerely,
John Hayes
